The Mid-Year Pivot: How to Realign Your Career

This June, give yourself the space to reconnect with your values, your vision, and your voice.

There’s something powerful about this time of year. June invites reflection on what we’ve accomplished and whether our paths still align with who we’re becoming. I have embraced this mid-year moment as an opportunity to realign with the work, message, and leadership that feels most meaningful to me.

With a stronger foundation in place, I used this season as a strategic pause to clarify how I want to show up and where I’m called to deepen my impact. It marked a shift toward leading with purpose. That same clarity is what I help my clients reconnect to, anchored in their values, shaped by their vision, and aligned with the kind of leadership that feels both true and powerful.

How Mid-Year Clarity Can Shift Your Path Forward

Mid-year offers a natural pause. It’s an opportunity to reflect on what is working and what may be misaligned. The beauty lies in the space it creates to intentionally shift before burnout sets in. For some of us, this season signifies preparing for a formal mid-year performance review. For others, it’s simply a personal check-in and an opportunity to step back and ask: Is the direction I’m heading still aligned with the vision I’m holding?

Take a moment this week to check in with yourself:

  • Is my career still aligned with my values and vision?

  • Does my professional presence reflect who I am today?

  • Am I moving with intention or simply out of habit?

These are the questions I return to each June, both in my client work and in my own leadership journey. High performance may look impressive on paper, but without alignment, it can lead to burnout or a loss of purpose. This isn't anecdotal. According to the 2024 NAMI/Ipsos Workplace Mental Health Poll, 52% of employees reported feeling burned out in the past year, and 37% stated that burnout negatively impacted their ability to perform their jobs effectively. That’s a clear sign that something deeper needs to shift.

Is It Time to Realign? What this Season Often Reveals

By the middle of the year, patterns begin to surface. You’ve gained enough insight into your energy, results, and engagement to sense when something’s not quite aligned. Noticing the disconnect is one thing, but deciding to do something about it is another. Here are a few signs it may be time to realign:

  1. You’ve grown, but your role hasn’t.
You’re operating at a higher level, yet your current responsibilities, recognition, or positioning haven’t evolved to reflect the value you bring. You feel ready for more, but it’s unclear how to claim it without coming across as pushy.

  2. You’re showing up, but something feels misaligned.
From the outside, it looks like progress. Internally, you feel disconnected from your work, goals, or the narrative being told about your career. You’re achieving a lot but not moving forward in the way that matters most to you.

  3. You’re ready for visibility, but your story isn’t clear.
You have ample experience, but you’re unsure how to communicate that in a way that opens the right doors. This could include how your story appears on your résumé or LinkedIn, as well as how you show up in interviews or leadership conversations.

These are the types of client challenges I hear every week, from leaders navigating transitions, professionals recovering after a layoff, and entrepreneurs stepping into a new level of growth. They’re not signs of failure. They’re signals that it’s time to evolve. With so few companies making meaningful improvements to their performance management practices, waiting for external clarity can quickly lead to frustration. That’s why a mid-year reset, on your terms, is one of the most strategic moves you can make.

Remember, you don’t need to scrap everything to feel more aligned, but you do need a story, strategy, and presence that reflect who you are now and where you’re heading.
