The Challenge of Reentry

How do you turn 18 months of caregiving, recovery, or a layoff into more than a résumé bullet and into a story of leadership? For many professionals, the fear is real: while you stepped away, the world moved on.

Earlier this month, I shared why résumé gaps should be seen as growth, not liabilities. Once you own your story, how do you reenter with confidence and strategy?

This article is part of the Career Storytelling Series for September’s Update Your Résumé Month. The first piece focused on claiming your gap. This one shows how to return to the workforce with renewed leadership.

Turning Reentry Into a Leadership Advantage

I’ve faced career gaps more than once: after maternity leave, a serious health setback, and recently, a layoff from public service. Each time, I feared I no longer measured up. Even after years of experience, I questioned whether I still belonged in the rooms I once led. Many professionals share this experience, especially women balancing careers and caregiving. For women of color, the pressure intensifies with the unspoken demand to return as exceptional.

Clients often ask: “How do I explain this gap without diminishing myself?” They don’t want sympathy. They want a strategy to show their value. My answer is simple: everything you’ve lived shapes your leadership. Managing uncertainty, high-stakes decisions with limited resources, and supporting others in crisis are executive skills, not just soft skills. Reframe your story so decision-makers recognize your value.

Reentry isn’t damage control. Done strategically, it’s an opportunity for reinvention.

The 4 Rs of Reentry

To guide my clients through this, I developed the 4 Rs of Reentry, a framework for returning with confidence.

1. Reclaim Your Value

Own your story before it owns you. Share your career pause and state what you gained. Whether bouncing back or recalibrating, these experiences have value.

2. Rebuild with Intention

Reskill by learning what aligns with your goals. Skills like AI, project management, and data storytelling show you’re future-ready.

3. Reposition Your Brand

A polished résumé is just the start. Reenter with a refreshed professional narrative:

  • Update your LinkedIn headline and About section to reflect where you are going.

  • Craft a positioning statement that captures your evolved leadership story.

  • Share insights or thought pieces weekly to show your value and vision.

Visibility accelerates progress. Do not stay silent.

4. Reignite Your Network

Let your network know you’re ready to contribute. Reconnect with thoughtful updates, personal messages, and meaningful conversations. Seek mentors, advocates, or sponsors who can vouch for you and open doors.

Your Reentry Strategy Starts Here
